Villanova opens its 2008-2009 season tonight against the Albany Great Danes of the America East Conference. Albany was 15-15 last season and they are projected to finish sixth in their conference this season.
#16 seed Albany gave #1 UConn a bit of a scare in the opening round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, before UConn regrouped and pulled away to a 72-59 win. Senior Jimmie Covington is the only remaining player to play in that game. Villanova is 1-0 all-time against Albany, the only meeting coming in 2004.
Villanova should overpower Albany with their athleticism. I don't expect this one to be close. Albany should be more competitive than Northwood, but Villanova should play better after shaking the rust off in the exhibition game. Plus they are back in the comforts of the Pavilion, with the always intimidating student section.
Projected starting 5:
PG - Scottie Reynolds
SG - Corey Stokes
SF - Dwayne Anderson
PF - Antonio Pena
